Who are we?

The North Shore Light Opera Society is a registered, non-profit society which has been continuously staging musical theatre on the North Shore and elsewhere since 1948. This makes us the oldest-established, continuously-producing musical theatre company in B.C. and hence a uniquely-valuable community asset.

What do we do?

As our name suggests, we are dedicated to the presentation of musical theatre on the North Shore to a professional standard with a maximum of community involvement. There's room for everyone to become involved in our ongoing efforts to preserve and promote this fascinating musical genre!

Great - how can I become involved?

Well, first and foremost we're always reaching out into the community in an ongoing search for talented individuals who can become involved with our productions as performers There are no age limits - we have potential opportunities for performers from 8 to 80! It doesn't matter if you're a solo vocalist, a chorus singer or an instrumental musician - we'd love to see you at one of our auditions! Check this website for upcoming shows and audition dates!

But I can't carry a tune in a bucket......!

No matter - there are many other ways in which you can make an invaluable contribution to our productions as a volunteer and thereby demonstrate your support for musical theatre within our community! Here are just a few:

• Many people don't realize the variety and magnitude of the behind-the-scenes work that makes each show possible! You can become involved with the actual productions as a makeup artist, hairstylist, prop maker (either sourcing them or making them), stage management, costume design and making, set construction . . . in fact, any of the myriad things that are essential ingredients of a successful performance. These tasks are all just as important as those of the actual performers - without them there's no show! Our friendly production team can find valuable uses for all such volunteers!

• We always need help with publicity - artwork for posters, promotion materials for distribution within the community, tickets, etc. Have a flair for promotional art?? Give us a call at 604-987-7001.

Fundraising is absolutely crucial to our ongoing efforts, particularly in view of recent cut-backs in Government support for community arts. We're always looking for people with ideas and ability to help with planning and organizing fundraising events and promotions, contacting potential sponsors, developing fundraising promotions to be run concurrently with productions, etc. Or, if you can't help in those areas, become a sponsor of our organization through a cash donation to the cause which is equally appreciated. All such sponsors are gratefully acknowledged! One for the money, two for the show!!

• In order to remain viable, we have to maintain a high profile as a valuable community asset. This requires that we market ourselves with a positive image that will have broad community appeal. To help meet this essential goal, we'd love to hear from any supporter(s) having marketing skills which they are willing to make available to us!

• We live in an electronic age, which means that we are always looking for people with website maintenance skills, on-line marketing skills, on-line merchandizing and promotion using social networking (FaceBook, Twitter, etc.). If you can help in these areas, we'd love to hear from you!
